In honor of the 2012 Olympic games starting at the end of the month, I thought I’d highlight the use of mobile SMS
marketing for the athletics/sports field.  Whether it be a huge, athletic undertaking like the Olympics or a junior sporting event, texting offers a great way to connect with fans, parents, friends and athletes.

Again, I want to stress the importance of an opt-in that is totally permission based.  It can be a requirement for enrolling a child in sports or simply an optional method of communication for hard-core fans.  The key is to set it up and promote it in an honest and transparent way.  That means if you say its for getting updates on the medal count for the Olympics, don’t also send texts about popular London hangouts and restaurants unless you said you would send that too.  Simply put, use truth in advertising.  There’s no faster way to have people drop off your list than to start sending spam

But now on to the fun stuff – Marketing to your mobile list!

There are all sorts of things you can send via text to an athletic community!

    • Send scores (Duh!)
    • Discounts to athletic gear
    • Alerts to parents on where the victory celebration will be held after the game
    • Raffle autographed items to the fans
    • Alert everyone to rescheduled games
    • Raise money/fundraising
    • Send reminders
    • Vote for the athlete of the year (a la American Idol style)
    • Send sports news – you can break this down by sport (i.e. golf, tennis)
And the list can go on and on with just your creativity to fill a void for your sports fans, athletic booster clubs, etc.  If you

need help brainstorming different ways to use text for your sports team or group, feel free to contact us or even browse some of our other mobile marketing spotlights for ideas.

The 2012 summer Olympic games are being held in London, England from July 27 to August 12.  Of course, you can follow the Olympics on Facebook.   Will you be watching the games?
